The Pazo del Hórreo now houses the main regional institution. It was originally the Veterinary School of Compostela, but only served this function from 1915 to 1924. During Franco's regime, the building became dependent on the Ministry of Defence, being used exclusively as military barracks, although the school's facilities had already been shared with the Army since the flu epidemic of 1918.
Once democracy was established and the Statute of Autonomy approved, the government of the Xunta acquired the Pazo del Hórreo again for 500 million pesetas and dedicated the pazo to house the Galician Parliament.
Inside important Galician works of art are kept, mainly paintings and sculptures, including works by Urbano Lugrís, Laxeiro, Carlos Maside, Isaac Díaz Pardo, Francisco Lloréns and Xaime Quesada.
The library, designed by Iago Seara, contains private collections of figures such as Ricardo Carvalho Calero, the brothers Antón and Ramón Vilar Ponte, the Cantabrian author Elena Quiroga, a member of the Royal Spanish Academy and closely linked to Galicia, and the academician of the Academy of History, Dalmiro de Válgoma.
