The building of Compostela's bus and train station is the newest infrastructure visible from the City of Culture on Mount Gaiás, a design by the architectural studio of Juan Herreros inaugurated in May 2021.
The Compostela Intermodal Station project envisages the integration of the two stations with the aim of simplifying the mobility and transit of people visiting the city for tourism, work or studies.
According to architect Juan Herreros on his website, the design has a dual purpose: an urban and social mission, as it connects the southern neighbourhoods of the city with the historic centre on foot and by bicycle, an issue that favours the transformation of the city's urban use. At the moment it houses the bus station, the railway station is still the same as it has been for the last eight decades, inaugurated on 14 April 1943 when the A Coruña-Santiago de Compostela line was opened. It replaced the Cornes station, in the Conxo neighbourhood. The building stands out for the stately appearance of its central pavilion with two wings, topped by square towers.
